How to Record/Capture your Desktop using VLC Media Player

VLC Media player is not just a media player, It has many great features you probably don’t know about. You may require this feature of VLC very useful when you need to record/capture your desktop to prepare some How-to tutorial for your client or for YouTube upload. Here, In this post I am going to explain you the step by step process to record your desktop using VLC media Player.


I believe you must have VLC media player installed in your computer. If you don’t have you can download it from the VLC medial player website for free.

Step 1. Open VLC Media Player.

Step 2. Click on Media-> Open Capture Devices or Press Ctrl+C. Open Media Windows opens up.

Step 3. Click on Capture Devices. Select “Desktop” from the Capture mode drop down, edit desired frame rate for the capture and make it 10.00 f/s.

Step 4. Select Stream. Stream Output Windows pops up.

Step 5. Click next, Click on Add to add file name and path.

Step 6. Enter file name and path. Click Next->Next->Stream to Start your desktop recording.

Step 7. You are done. Click stop or close VLC media player to stop recording of your desktop.
